Perfect Christmas Red Lip: Makeup Look

It’s a staple in most people’s Look Book for December, and it’s easy to see why. Welcome to Blogmas Day 8!

I’m one of those people who rocks a red lip all year, but there’s something a little more special when you do it during December. I can’t think of anything more festive that a red lip!

This December, I’ve got quite a few Christmas parties, a wedding reception and a work do lined up, and I can guarantee you that I’ll be rocking this look for most of them!

Pre-base

I find that with a red lip it’s important to have a completely flawless base. For this, I like to start with a lip scrub to remove any dry skin and flakiness before I apply my lipstick. I tend to go for the Lush Lip Scrub in Popcorn, because it’s great at exfoliating, but also isn’t particularly unpleasant to taste either. I tend to follow this up with a lip balm to help moisturise my lips and prevent them from getting sore. Any lip balm would do, but I love these Martinsville Emporium Homemade Lip Balms which I stumbled across online. They’re 100% natural and come in so many different scents – I especially love the fact that they are flavourless so you don’t constantly lick your lips. Now onto Primer; it’s my absolute go-to for perfect skin. Recently, I’ve been enjoying The Ordinary High Fluidity Primer, because it soaks in really quickly, cover up any pores and leaves my skin feeling really soft. Occasionally I’ll add a touch of the Benefit Porefessional Primer, just in areas where my makeup tends to run – mainly around my nose and eyes. This stuff is like glue; it covers absolutely EVERYTHING and leaves my skin looking flawless, but also enhances the longevity of my foundation, too.

Base

All prepped and ready, onto the foundation. I’ve been using several throughout the past month, but I’ve fallen in love with my Makeup Forever Ultra HD Foundation again. I just love how flawless this makes my skin look, without looking too heavy or too matte. It’s probably my longest lasting foundation too, so it’s great knowing I can rely on this one to stay out for longer. As my skin has been pretty clear for a while now, I only really need concealer on my under eye area. I’ve been loving my Beauty Pie Super Luminous Concealer in 200 Light; I wouldn’t say this is the product for you if you require a heavy coverage concealer, but as I’m only using this for brightening purposes it does wonders. As always, I’m using my trusty Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder. This stuff is a complete Godsend, and I use it near enough everyday. It is a little more pricey than other loose Setting powders, but it’s so finely milled it sits beautifully on the skin and looks effortless. From here, it’s time to contour and highlight. I’ve been using the Rimmel Kate Moss Trio in the shade 002 Coral as I find the contour shade in this palette is the perfect neutral shade for my skin tone. The highlight is also a gorgeous champagne colour; it’s not too in your face but adds a lovely subtle glow. The blush here is too peachy, so instead I’m using my Zoeva Coral Spectrum Blus Palette, and using he pink shade in the bottom right hand corner just to add a little colour to my cheeky. To bronze, I’m using my ever faithful Benefit Hoola Bronzer. I haven’t tried Hooler Lite yet, but the original is perfect to warm up my face without looking too orange.

Eyes

Base done, and now onto the eyes. I’m keeping it very simple due to the bold lip, so I’m just taking my Makeup Geek Eye Shadows in my Z Palette to lightly contour the eye socket. I’m using the shade Latte through the crease as my transition, and then Bake Sale just to darken that up slightly. With just a touch of Cabin Fever on the inner corner and lid, and that’s complete. There’s nothing like a winged eye with a red lip, so I’m using my NYX Epic Ink Liner, as I love the felt pen tip for its precision. This is such a deep black and so simple to apply. I’m not the greatest with eyeliner but this product makes it so much easier. Even though the eye makeup is fairly simple, I love having long feathery lashes for added volume. To do this, I’m using my Too Faced Better than Sex mascara, which is my absolute favourite for added drama. I’ve actually run out of this, so I’m using a sample sized one at the moment. Maybe in the January sales I’ll treat myself to another one…

And finally, the star of the show… the red lip! There are so many shades, tones and finishes you can go for, but personally I love a matte finish and blue-toned red. I just find the matte finish looks so sultry, whilst the blue undertones are so flattering on my skin tone. For the basis of this look, I’m reaching for my MAC Ruby Woo. There’s a reason why this product is iconic, and it’s my shade of the moment. I love the finish; it’s part of their retro matte collection so it is ├╝ber matte. I like to apply a tiny bit of balm before I apply it just to stop it dragging, as I find that it can sometimes be a little dry when you initially apply it. The staying power, however, is perfect. It lasts all night without budging; you can eat, drink, kiss under the mistletoe… and it won’t move.

And here is my completed look! I love how simple yet glamorous this look it; ready for a party without looking too overdone. You could always mix it up by adding glitter or a smoky eye, but personally I love the focus to be on the red lip. Party on!
