The Dupe List: Too Faced Better than Sex Mascara

Another day, another dupe! This time I’ll be finding a dupe for my favourite high end mascara EVER. Too Faced Better than Sex mascara is my OG high end mascara – nothing else touches it!

It actually replaced Benefit’s Bad Girl Lash mascara as my favourite High End product. What I love about it is the fact it both volumises and thickens; the hourglass wand is perfect for getting into the root of the lashes for that maximum lift, and it doesn’t lose any volume through the course of the day.

I especially love the formula as it’s quite dry, meaning it doesn’t go clumpy or transfer either. The finished look is decidedly not natural, but as someone who doesn’t tend to wear false lashes this doesn’t particularly bother me that much. I’d much rather put on two coats of this stuff over falsies any day.

However despite my extreme love for the product, at £19.00 a pop I do understand that it is expensive. I try to use it sparingly, but the costs do add up very quickly!

Instead, I’ve tried a LOT of different high street mascaras in search of the perfect dupe. I tend to go through a lot of mascara anyway, but with the relatively short shelf life and the risk of infection from a contaminated product I tend to swap them often; preferring to bin them after 4 months or so and start a fresh tube.

What I’ve got for you are some of my best High Street picks, that give a similar result for a fraction of the price!

Maybelline Great Big Lash Mascara in Blackest Black (£5.99)

This stuff is great value for money! Granted, it does have a very wet formula so I would recommend opening it up and leaving it to dry out for a while, but you can’t beat it in terms of price. I never liked the old school Big Lash Mascara as it was way too clumping, but this new revised formula isn’t half bad. It gives great volume and whilst it doesn’t last all day, it builds well when you layer it. It does clump if you put on too much too soon, so make sure you leave a little drying time between coats, but with a saving of £13 you can’t beat it!

Rimmel Lash Accelerator Mascara (£7.99)

Like Too Faced, this provides both length and volume. Not as much volume as Better than Sex, but the lengthening power is phenomenal! The formula here is thick and dry, which is perfect for really being able to get maximum lift from the root of the lashes. You can easily get away with one coat so a little goes a long way, but it’s not overly clumping should you want to push for two.

One thing you may want to be aware of is that over the course of the day it does tend to flake a little. It’s not that bad, but it might be something to bear in mind that less is more…

Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara (£8.99)
Every blogger has raved about this at some point! I always find that this works best when you’ve given it a week or two to dry out a bit first; I get an amazing curl and plenty of volume then! The wand can be a little tricky to use at first; there’s two types of curve and bristles, from a longer side to give length, and a shorter side to provide volume. But once you’ve got the knack it’s a great product to own.

L’Oreal Mega Volume Miss Hippie Mascara (£7.99)
They’ve definitely hit the nail on the head with this mascara. The brush IS mega; it’s incredibly full, but the bristles are shorter and a lot more natural than other plastic wands. In shape it’s probably the closest match to Better than Sex than some of the other dupers here.

The product itself isn’t too wet so I haven’t had an issue with smudging, and I’ve found that its easy enough to layer the product to get a fuller look without looking spidery. I have found that with long use it does get a little flaky on the lashes, but I find that this is the case with high street mascaras, so I wasn’t too bothered by this.

Revlon Super Length Mascara (£9.99)
I first received this in a GlossyBox around 18 months ago, and this is my third one since then! This has the biggest brush out of all the dupes, and is designed purely for length. What I like best about this is the way it makes your lashes appear more feathery; it’s definitely one for a more natural or subtle look!

This particular offering works by coating the lashes with minute fibers to add length to the lashes; keeping volume to a minimum but maximizing length for a daytime appropriate look. I find that it makes me appear more awake, by giving the illusion of a larger, wider eye.

And there you have it! Whilst Better than Sex remains a firm favourite, it’s great to know that there are some everyday high street dupes you can use for exactly the same effect.

Let me know if you come across any more dupes!
