I’ve talked endlessly about my love of matte eye shadows and how I only ever buy a new palette after intensely scrutinizing the selection of mattes included, so over the years I’ve collected quite a few that I value for their matte selection.
One of my everyday go-to palettes for work is the NYX Ultimate Eyeshadow Palette, in the shades Warm Neutrals. NYX do a LOT of these palettes under various guises (cool neutrals, vivid brights, smokey etc), but for me the warm neutrals is the only one I’ll need because it contains everything I go for on a daily basis.
Each palette contains 16 shades in either a matte or shimmer formulation, in a spectrum of shades suited to the aesthetic. The Warm Neutral palette contains 9 mattes and 7 shimmers – perfect balance for any matte shadow lover!
Packaging is a standard black plastic case; nothing special but definitely portable and secure. It’s actually a little difficult to get into the thing; that clasp is hard to work!
One thing I was particularly pleased about was the inclusion of a mid-toned matte brown; this is my absolute priority in any palette for a transition shade so I was pleased that this does come with one. I like the deeper browns available, but I did think that this was lacking a deep brown/black for a smoky eye; the darkest grey/brown shade isn’t nearly dark enough for the looks I could achieve with the inclusion of the former.
As you can see from the swatches, the pans are fairly pigmented and cover the spectrum of colours that you will need to create the majority of looks. A few of the more shimmery shades were a little lame – as was the deepest grey/brown as mentioned earlier – but on the whole it’s a decent palette. The shadows also last fairly well with minimal fallout; they faded a little towards the end of the day, but with a decent primer and setting spray this could be rectified.
As I said earlier, this is a staple in my day-to-day makeup because it’s easy to use and easy to blend; when I’m up early and running around trying to get everything ready before leaving for work I don’t have the luxury of time to do my makeup properly, so something that can create pretty looks quickly is a winner in my book!
The NXY Ultimate Shadow Palettes are available in Boots, for £16.00.
