2018 in Review

What a year! I know that some people didn’t have the greatest 2018, but for me it was fantastic! When I think about how far I’ve come since this time, I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished, and so ready for 2019!

When I review the resolutions I made this time last year, I’m proud that so many of them were achieved.

What did 2018 hold for me?

Me and Rob took the plunge, put our house on the market (and sold it within the week!) and brought our dream family home! We’ve got an extra bedroom, massive kitchen and diner, huge playroom for all the kids toys and the potential to extend in the future. And whilst there is a lot of work we need to do in order to get it looking the way we want it, the renovation and evolution of our house is the thing we’re looking forward to the most.

I have so many plans and ideas about what I want to do and how I want it to look, I can’t wait to put these plans into action. My Pinterest boards are working overtime!

We’ve rebuilt our savings too, and surprisingly didn’t touch them at all during the house move! From the windfall payment we received off my Great Uncle in 2016, we’ve saved the lot and continued to grow it in 2017 and 2018. This means we have a nice amount to continue to add to in 2019, which will eventually go on an extension to our house.

And finally, we met our beautiful little girl. Three became four and things could not be more perfect. She’s the most smiley and delightful little addition to our family; it’s been so wonderful seeing Rob grow as a father and Owen become a big brother. When I thought my heart couldn’t become any more full of love, it’s grown three sizes bigger once again.

2018 in review

When I recap the resolutions I made last year the ‘focus points’ I set worked brilliantly as I didn’t feel any pressure or time restrictions to complete them. Furthermore, I didn’t beat myself up if I slipped up one day; it didn’t deter me to give up altogether, but rather to just draw a line and start again.

Biting the skin around my thumbs
Something I’ve gone back and forth over; I’ve gone months without doing it at all and then after several stresses suddenly started back up again. Currently, my thumbs are completely healed and I haven’t bitten them for several weeks. I’m nowhere near healed, but feel good that I’ve gotten better.

Posting regularly on social media
I spoke at length about improving my engagement on Twitter and Instagram, and can confidently say I’ve cracked this! I regularly post content to Instagram thanks to a scheduling app I now use, and my engagement on Twitter is slowly allowing me to grow and is driving more traffic to my blog. I’ve worked really hard on my photography and flat lays this year, and whilst my Grid isn’t perfect, it’s miles better than last year and I’m glad I’ve stuck at it.

Travelling further afield
Alas, no such luck. Whilst me and Rob did take the kids away last year, we didn’t go anywhere new. Money restrictions, Pregnancy, house move and work commitments make this incredibly difficult to achieve. I’d love to do more European City Breaks, but these aren’t the most practical of holidays with young kids…

Exercising and eating healthier
Tick. I joined Slimming World in the latter half of 2017, and from then up until April when we announced my pregnancy, I lost a stone and a half. And whilst this may have been put back on when carrying Emilia, at least I’ve only put on some of what I lost and not any more.

Redecorate the house
Tick. Sort of. We finished the kitchen in our old house and we were therefore able to sell it for a good profit. That being said, we’ve taken on a whole load of decorating since moving to the new one.

Learning a new skill
Nope. No chance. When have I ever got the time?

Spending more time reading
Check. You can see how I got on last year here, and I’ve set a new target for 2019. Whilst my time to read dwindled in the latter half of the year with work, pregnancy and juggling two children’s needs, I’ve managed to spend a lot more time doing something I love. And I’m determined to continue to grow this in 2019.

So what does 2019 hold for me?

Using the same goals from last year, the main focus of 2019 is making sure I make time for myself. I spend so much of it looking after everyone else, I’m going to be selfish for once and prioritize my own health and happiness over other people. So, without further ado…

A bad habit I’m going to break:
Biting the skin around my bloody thumbs! I hate it and am determined to crack it!

A habit I’m going to develop:
Photography. I really want to spend 2019 whilst I’m on maternity leave getting to use my DSLR a lot more; I take some great photos but really want to know the nuances of photography and how to edit my photos, frame them etc.

A destination I’d like to visit:
Anywhere I’ve not been before. Again, time and money will be an issue, but I’d like to go somewhere different.

I’m going to work harder at:
Slimming World. I’m back at a regular group since giving birth to Emilia, and feeling so motivated to succeed! I’d like to get to my interim weight by the end of the year (just over two stone away) with my end goal being the weight I was when I met my husband. I can do this!

A project I’d like to finish:
Decorating the house. We’ve made a good start in the two months we’ve been living here, and ready to tackle the bulk of the work in 2019. The house has so much potential to be an incredible family home, and I’d like to put that to fruition this year.

A class I’d like to take:
Not so much take, but to study in my own time and that’s photography. As stated previously, I want to understand how to use my camera on a more professional basis, and being on maternity leave is a perfect time to experiment. I’d also like to join a book club, and will have to find one locally that I can participate in.


I’d like to spend more time…
On me. Over the last couple of years my confidence has been knocked and I’ve had such low self-esteem. This year, I want to reclaim a little bit of the old me, and start to feel a bit better about myself.
